Venture Capital Funds are seeking new Biotech and Pharma deals

- Biotech was second in venture capital funding levels, with $639 million going to 66 companies, up 14%.
- An aging baby boomer population. A growing drive to eradicate cancer and diabetes. A fear that infectious diseases may be used as tools of war. These factors and others have come together to help drive up venture capital interest in the life sciences and medical device area.
- Renewed interest in developing vaccines for infectious diseases.
- Also fueling life science investment activity has been the emergence of many new venture capital funds in the past year or so devoted to the sector, as well as the return of some funds that had abandoned it during the previous Internet venture capital boom.
- Other findings of the survey are that valuations of life sciences companies have climbed steadily in the past five years, reaching a median valuation of $32.5 million in 2002, up from $17.7 million in 1998, an 80% increase.
